Wall-Hung Basin Installation: Load Capacity and Wall Requirements

A is only as safe as the wall behind it. The basin plus water can weigh 25-40 kg, and a user leaning on the rim adds a dynamic load that can double that. So the first question before installation is not the basin's style but the wall's structure: solid masonry can take a wall hung basin with expansion bolts, while a stud wall needs the fixing driven into the frame - never into the plasterboard alone. Get the wall right and a wall hung basin serves for decades; get it wrong and it ends in a cracked basin and a damaged wall.

1. Locate the structure. Use a stud finder and mark the studs or the concrete. The bracket must anchor into structure, not into plasterboard.
2. Mark the height. The basin rim typically lands 800-850 mm above the finished floor. Mark the bracket line level, then check it with a spirit level twice.
3. Drill and fix the bracket. Drill with the right bit for the wall, insert the anchors, and torque the bolts to spec. The bracket carries everything - the basin only hangs on it.
4. Hang the basin. Seat the basin on the bracket and fix it per the product instructions. A should feel rock-solid before any pipework is connected.
5. Connect and seal. Run the supply and drain, then seal the wall joint with silicone. Leave the sealant to cure before the basin is used.

The rated load on a bracket assumes the basin sits still. Real bathrooms add the load of a full basin of water, a leaning guest, and a child who climbs to reach the mirror. A good rule: spec the bracket for at least double the basin's filled weight. If the chosen is heavy ceramic, check whether it needs two brackets or a floor support. And never trust adhesive or silicone to carry weight - silicone seals the joint, the steel carries the basin.
